That is the admission of a US lieutenant general, Lieutenant General Antonio Aguto – the person in charge of sending precision weapons to Ukraine – admitted on Tuesday, December 12.
Speaking via video link at an event organized by the US Army’s Command, Control and Communications-Tactical Program Executive Office, Mr. Antonio emphasized that Russia is constantly finding ways to jam its weapons. The exact weapons the US sends to Ukraine “is a challenge”.
Since December 2022, Mr. Aguto has led the Ukraine Security Assistance Group, the umbrella organization that coordinates allied military aid to Ukraine.
Unnamed US defense officials previously told CNN that Russia jammed US-supplied precision missiles, causing them to go off course.
Therefore, US and Ukrainian forces must find a solution, such as modifying the missile launcher. Russia later modified its jamming method, forcing the US to find other measures to deal with it.
Weapons such as the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System and the HIMARS long-range artillery have given Ukraine a crucial advantage on the battlefield by pushing Russian ammunition stores out of range.
But leaked US documents also claim that Russia is jamming GPS-guided bombs that the US donated to Ukraine.
Russia currently has many advanced jamming capabilities, including several jammers that can block GPS signals at ranges of up to 40km. Ukrainian soldiers have reported that Russian jammers regularly bring down their drones and can also cause problems when Ukraine uses the Starlink satellite internet system for operational planning. war.
Both Russia and Ukraine have attacked army groups far from the front lines using precision-guided weapons, with Ukraine reportedly killing up to 12 Russian generals using various means.
Gen. Aguto said the Pentagon needs to improve its weapons and equipment to be “resilient enough and flexible enough to counter what our adversaries do…Within weeks or months of them When we use something on the battlefield, our adversaries may find ways to disrupt or counter some of these capabilities.”
He added that the US should also improve communication between allies, including sharing information on everything from logistics to battlefield data.
The Maven battlefield intelligence sharing system is being used to plan logistics in support of Ukraine, Aguto said, and said AI tools could further speed up the planning process.
The US has shipped equipment and weapons worth billions of dollars to Ukraine, but recently Republicans in the Senate blocked a bill to provide a huge new aid package to Ukraine.
