On Saturday, President Donald Trump issued a pointed warning to Elon Musk, the influential tech billionaire and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, indicating that there would be “serious consequences” if Musk financially backs Democratic candidates who intend to challenge Republicans supportive of the GOP’s major new budget legislation. Speaking during a phone interview with NBC News, Trump cautioned that such political interference would not go unpunished.
“If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump declared. Although he refrained from specifying what those consequences might be, the tone of his remarks was unmistakably stern. “He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that,” he emphasized again, underlining his resolve to act if provoked.
The remarks come on the heels of a heated and very public deterioration of the previously cooperative relationship between the president and Musk. Trump made it abundantly clear that he holds no interest in reconciling with Musk. When asked if he had any intention of mending fences with the tech mogul, he responded flatly: “No.” Asked whether he believed their relationship was permanently damaged, Trump replied, “I would assume so, yeah.”
These were Trump’s most detailed comments since a series of fiery exchanges between the two erupted earlier in the week across social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter) and Truth Social. He noted that, despite the fallout, the controversy had inadvertently solidified party unity. “The Republican Party has never been this united,” Trump said, adding that internal cohesion has only grown stronger since the conflict became public.
Trump also stated that he had no immediate plans to speak to Musk. “I’m too busy doing other things,” the president said, firmly closing the door on any near-term dialogue. “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
