Katherine Marie Helmond was an American film, theater, and television actress and director. Born on July 5, 1929, in Galveston, Texas, she had a career spanning five decades of television acting. She was known for her starring role as Jessica Tate on the ABC prime time soap opera sitcom Soap from 1977 to 1981, and her co-starring role as Mona Robinson on Who's the Boss from 1984 to 1992. Her television work also included playing Doris Sherman on Coach and Lois Whelan on Everybody Loves Raymond. Additionally, she guest starred on numerous programs, including True Blood, Strong Medicine, Providence, The Love Boat, The Bionic Woman, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bob Newhart Show, Mannix, and Gunsmoke. Katherine Helmond passed away on February 23, 2019, at the age of 89.
