Hayley Elizabeth Atwell is a British and American actress born on April 5, 1982, in London, England, United Kingdom. After appearing in various West End productions, she gained popularity for her roles in period dramas, including the films Brideshead Revisited and The Duchess in 2008, as well as the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth in 2010. For her work in The Duchess, she received a British Independent Film Award nomination, and for The Pillars of the Earth, she received a Golden Globe Award nomination. Atwell rose to prominence portraying Agent Peggy Carter in Marvel Cinematic Universe films, beginning with Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011, which inspired the spin-off ABC television series Agent Carter, broadcast from 2015 to 2016.
