Apple unveiled iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 at WWDC 2026 on Monday, June 8, extending iPhone support back to the iPhone 11. While the update introduces significant performance boosts and a revamped Siri AI, the most advanced intelligence features remain restricted to newer hardware with higher RAM capacities.
Hardware Support: The iPhone 11 Gets a Seven-Year Lifeline

iPhone 11 owners are receiving a significant extension of their device’s useful life. According to Ars Technica, the iOS 27 update will run on all iPhones capable of running iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE. This brings the iPhone 11, originally released in September 2019, to seven years of major software updates. This longevity stands in contrast to competitors like Google’s Pixel 4 and Samsung’s Galaxy S10, which received roughly three years of platform updates.
The news is less celebratory for certain iPad users. iPadOS 27 will drop support for the third-generation iPad Air, eighth-generation iPad, and fifth-generation iPad mini. These devices rely on the older A12 Bionic chip, whereas the new operating system now requires an A13 chip or better.
However, a significant technical divide is emerging based on memory rather than just processing power. While the OS itself is compatible with older hardware, the heavy lifting required for “Apple Intelligence” is gated by RAM. Most new intelligence features require at least 8GB of RAM, limiting them to the iPhone 15 Pro or newer, the iPhone 16, or the iPhone Air. On the iPad, users need an Air or Pro model with an M1 chip or newer.
For those seeking the most advanced local AI models, the requirements jump even higher. These features demand a newer Apple Silicon chip and at least 12GB of RAM, a specification reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone Air, the M4 iPad Air, or the M4 and M5 iPad Pro models.
Siri AI and the New Intelligence Ecosystem

The centerpiece of the WWDC presentation was the transformation of Apple’s virtual assistant. As CNET reported, iOS 27 integrates artificial intelligence directly into the assistant, now referred to as Siri AI. This update is intended to touch nearly every aspect of the user experience.
Users can now interact with Siri AI by swiping down on the Dynamic Island to start a conversation or search. The assistant is also designed to take direct actions within existing apps like Messages, Music, and Reminders. To manage these interactions, Apple is introducing a dedicated Siri AI app that acts as a centralized memory bank for past requests and conversations.

The software also brings new visual and functional tools. A new Siri Mode in the Camera app allows users to point their device at objects to receive instant information. Meanwhile, the Image Playground app has been updated to allow for the creation of photorealistic images.
Visually, the OS is evolving through the Liquid Glass design language. First introduced in 2025, the update adds a slider that allows users to toggle between Ultra Clear and Tinted Glass, making device elements anywhere from semitranslucent to completely opaque. This represents the first major visual overhaul for the iPhone since the introduction of iOS 7 in 2013.
Speed and Efficiency: Faster App Launches and AirDrop

Apple is positioning iOS 27 as a performance-centric release. Engadget highlighted that the new operating systems were designed specifically with speed in mind, targeting both first- and third-party application performance.
App launch speeds: up to 30 percent faster
AirDrop file sharing: up to 80 percent faster
External drive transfers on iPad: up to five times faster
To maintain these speeds on older hardware, Apple is porting an advanced CPU scheduler—previously reserved for newer models—to older devices. This system manages the phone’s workload to ensure processing power is used efficiently.
“Even when you’re doing a ton of things at once requiring a whole lot of compute, the CPU scheduler ensures the right work is executed at precisely the right time,” Stacey Ford, Apple’s vice president of OS program management, via Business Insider
According to Business Insider, Stacey Ford noted that these updates “will make older iPhones feel even more responsive.” Beyond raw speed, the update improves the way devices handle connectivity, allowing for smoother switching between Wi-Fi and cellular service without requiring manual intervention in the Control Center.
How to Download the iOS 27 Developer Beta
Developers and enthusiasts can access the first versions of these operating systems immediately. As Mashable explained, the process begins with enrollment in the Apple Developer Program. While the program is required for those looking to sell apps in the App Store, no payment is necessary simply to download the beta software.
To install the iOS 27 Developer Beta, users should follow these steps:
Back up your device to prevent data loss from potential bugs.
Open the Settings app and navigate to General.
Tap on Software Update and then select the Beta Updates option.
Choose “iOS 27 Developer Beta” from the menu.
For those using Mac hardware, the macOS 27 “Golden Gate” beta follows a similar path through System Settings. Users should navigate to General, then Software Update, and click the “i” icon next to the Beta Updates option to select the macOS Developer Golden Gate Beta.
While developer betas are available now, Apple is expected to release a version for public beta testers in July. The final, stable versions of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 are scheduled for a general release this fall, following the typical release cycle.
