The Research, Report & Crime team at stern together with Team Wallraff / RTL Deutschland, published the findings of a months-long investigation into the Kaufland supermarket chain.

The results, presented in a detailed news feature, reveal alarming conditions across dozens of the 50 branches we examined – including mouse droppings in bakery departments, mouldy cheese at fresh food counters, and traces of fecal bacteria on chicken meat – and much more.
It was a real privilege to work on the illustrations for this important investigative piece, alongside Marta Kochanek who brought incredible clarity and care to the visual concept and editing.
Our work accompanied Stern’s in-depth report uncovering serious hygiene violations at several Kaufland stores – from mouse droppings in the bakery section and mouldy products, to malfunctioning refrigeration systems and contaminated meat. Reporters also exposed cases where spoiled goods were relabelled and resold. Employees described a high-pressure work environment with little tolerance for illness.
Translating such disturbing findings into visual form was both challenging and essential – our aim was to reflect the gravity of the investigation through a clear and impactful visual language. To underscore the report’s findings on poor hygiene and neglect at Kaufland, we incorporated elements of the company’s logo in a subtle yet recognizable way -linking the brand to themes of decay without being overtly confrontational.
