Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Cuba as a Category 3 storm after leaving a trail of
destruction in Jamaica.
In its latest advisory, the US National Hurricane Center stated that an “extremely dangerous hurricane Melissa makes landfall on the southern coast of eastern Cuba.”
Melissa is hitting Cuba’s southeastern coast, with sustained winds of 120 mph, while residents in Jamaica wait for daylight to assess the damage from the then-Category 5 hurricane.
According to Cuban authorities, about 735,000 people evacuated their homes in eastern Cuba as the storm neared.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has warned that the storm will cause “significant damage,” urging residents to follow evacuation orders.
The center reports that Melissa has weakened to a still-dangerous Category 3 hurricane after hitting the Jamaican town of New Hope, with winds reaching up to 185 mph.
