Sesame Street is a television series that premiered on November 10, 1969. The program was broadcast on NET, which served as a precursor to PBS. The show features a cast of human and Muppet characters who inhabit an inner city street. These inhabitants work to teach preschoolers basic social and educational concepts through the use of songs, games, cartoons, and comedy. During the first season, Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch were the only Muppets to appear regularly in scenes set on the street, while other Muppet characters debuted in separate segments. The development of the series followed years of preparation and five test shows. In the first pilot episode, a character named Gordon greeted two boys named David and Donald, and the episode focused on the letter D. As of 2023, the master recordings for two specific episodes of the series are considered lost media. The production continues to be a long-running educational resource for young viewers, utilizing various media formats to convey its lessons.
