Willem Dafoe, born William James Dafoe on July 22, 1955, in Appleton, Wisconsin, is an American actor known for his work in both mainstream and arthouse films. He made his film debut with an uncredited role in Heaven's Gate (1980). Dafoe has portrayed diverse characters throughout his career and is recognized for collaborating with filmmakers such as Paul Schrader, Abel Ferrara, Sam Raimi, Yorgos Lanthimos, Lars von Trier, Julian Schnabel, and Andrzej Żuławski. He has received numerous accolades, including a Volpi Cup Award for Best Actor and nominations for four Academy Awards, a British Academy Film Award, and four Golden Globe Awards. In 2018, he was honored with an Honorary Golden Bear.
