Dobson signed a contract with Universal Studios in 1972, which led to his role in the TV series Kojak. He is also known for his role as M. Patrick "Mack" MacKenzie in the soap opera Knots Landing. Dobson had a career spanning 56 known credits, and he passed away on September 6, 2020, at the age of 77.
