Biography
Jean-Jacques Annaud was born in Juvisy-sur-Orge, Essonne, on October 1, 1943. He was educated at the technical school in Vaugirard and graduated in 1964 from the film school Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques in Paris. He began his career by directing television advertisements in the late 1960s to early 1970s. His first feature film, Black and White in Color from 1976, drew on personal experience from his military service in Cameroon and won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His third film, Quest for Fire, received two Cesars for best film and best director. In 1986, he directed The Name of the Rose, an adaptation of the work by Umberto Eco.
