James Christopher Read is an American actor born on July 31, 1953, in Buffalo, New York. He began acting as a student at the University of Oregon, graduating in 1976. Following this, he studied acting in New York and performed in several off-Broadway and regional theatres, including three seasons at The Denver Center Theatre Company where he held leading roles. Read is perhaps best known for portraying George Hazard in the three North and South television miniseries from 1985, 1986, and 1994, which were based on John Jakes's trilogy of novels. He is also known for his co-starring role in the movie Beaches. He is married to actress Wendy Kilbourne.
