John Joseph Edward Jack Cassidy was an American actor of stage, film, and screen who was born on March 5, 1927, in Richmond Hill, New York, USA, and died on December 12, 1976, at the age of 49. His frequent professional persona was that of an urbane, super-confident egotist with a dramatic flair, similar to Broadway actor Frank Fay. Cassidy perfected this character to the extent that he was cast as John Barrymore in the feature film W.C. Fields and Me. The role of newsman Ted Baxter on the television series The Mary Tyler Moore Show was written with Cassidy in mind, but he turned it down because he felt it was not right for him, and the part went to Ted Knight. Cassidy later appeared as a guest.
