Tedrow began acting in the theater as a teenager and later studied acting at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1929. She was a founding member of San Diego's Old Globe Theater and initially worked as an ingénue. In 1934, she played 18 characters across multiple adaptations of Shakespearean plays at The Old Globe during the Chicago engagement. Over the course of her career, Tedrow accumulated 125 known acting credits in movies and television shows.
