Candice Bergen is an American actress and former fashion model. Born on May 9, 1946, in Beverly Hills, California, she began her career as a fashion model, appearing on the cover of Vogue. Bergen made her screen debut in the film The Group in 1966. She is known for her portrayal of the title character in the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown, for which she won five Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. Bergen also starred in the ABC drama Boston Legal as Shirley Schmidt. In films, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Starting Over and the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Gandhi.
