He graduated from New Rochelle High School in 1990 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University, where he joined the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. His parents are from Ghana, West Africa. Essandoh studied acting at the Acting Studio in New York City. In addition to acting, he is a playwright who authored Black Thang, which was published in the anthology Plays and Playwrights 2003. He is also the co-founder of The Defiant Ones writing and performance group.
