As the national and international news debates the recent claims around Autism, we cannot forget that it is not only adults who hear the news. Autistic children and young people are also listening. Listening to their existence and identity be framed as a problem to solve. Our AsIAm Youth Leadership Team has taught us how what is said on the news about Autism filters into their social media groups, school corridors and canteens.
So many Autistic advocates, parents and professionals have spent the past decade working together to shift the narrative. To create a generation of Autistic young people with a positive and proud identity. This cannot now be undone.
Children and young people, Autistic and non-Autistic, are listening. We have a duty to provide them with honest, accessible information they can reflect on, share and build upon. Please use this text and/or video to support this.
