The two selected clips taken from an episode of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show which aired on February 8th, 2025, exemplify The Daily Show’s use of conventions of mainstream news programs alongside specific editing and presentation techniques that diverge from those typical of traditional news media; displaying, redacting, and commenting on real news video footage. I argue that TDS utilizes these approaches to presentation to criticize the ways in which mainstream news media has failed to provide a realistic and critical representation of American politics and politicians. Further, by using these approaches, the show instead presents a critical, genuine, and non-misleading representation and response to America’s political landscape.
