The Wild Wild West is an American television series that blends elements of the Western, spy, and science fiction genres. Created by Michael Garrison, the program was developed during a period when the television western was losing popularity to the spy genre. Garrison conceived of the show as James Bond on horseback. The series aired on the CBS network for four seasons, running from September 17, 1965, to April 11, 1969. Set during the 1870s and the administration of President Ulysses Grant, the narrative follows Secret Service agents James West and Artemus Gordon. These undercover government agents work to solve crimes, protect the President, and foil the plans of megalomaniacal villains attempting to seize control of parts of the United States. The series is noted for incorporating fantasy elements, including the use of various technologically advanced devices. The production featured actors Robert Conrad and Ross Martin in the lead roles of the two agents.
