Released in the United States on December 19, 1946, The Return of Monte Cristo is an action and adventure film with a running time of one hour and thirty-one minutes. The story follows the grandson of Edmond Dantes, who is cheated out of his fortune and falsely imprisoned by a trio of connivers. Like his grandfather, the younger Dantes is shipped off to Devil's Island. He manages to escape alongside a fellow convict, a political radical named Bombelles. Following his escape, Dantes adopts the bearded guise of an elderly man in order to seek vengeance on his enemies, wreak havoc on his betrayers, and reclaim his birthright.
