In the seventh episode of the first season, titled “Seeing Red,” the CBI’s lead consultant, Patrick Jane, confronts a case that pits his skeptical, observation‑driven methods against a self‑styled psychic who claims to possess supernatural insight. The episode opens with the discovery of a homicide that appears to have been linked, at least in the eyes of the local community, to the psychic’s alleged abilities. Jane, whose background as a former celebrity psychic medium has left him intimately familiar with the tricks of deception, quickly becomes convinced that the individual is not only a charlatan but also the perpetrator of the murder.

Determined to prove both the fraudulence of the psychic’s claims and the suspect’s guilt, Jane devises a plan that leverages the very tools the psychic uses to manipulate others. He arranges a séance, presenting it as an opportunity for the supposed medium to demonstrate genuine powers before an audience that includes CBI personnel.
