The episode opens with the California Bureau of Investigation called to a case that has already drawn intense public attention. A drug dealer currently on trial is being blamed by law‑enforcement officials for the murders of a state witness who was scheduled to testify against him, as well as the witness’s girlfriend. The police’s theory is that the defendant, motivated by a desire to silence the witness and prevent further testimony, orchestrated the killings while his trial proceeds.

Patrick Jane, the former celebrity psychic medium who now works with the bureau, is assigned to the investigation. Jane’s role on the team is to apply his keen powers of observation and his talent for reading people, rather than relying on any claimed psychic ability. From the outset he questions the straightforward narrative presented by the detectives. He notes inconsistencies in the crime scene, the timing of the murders, and the behavior of individuals connected to the case. By carefully examining the evidence and interviewing those involved, Jane begins to construct an alternative explanation.
