The MTV Video Music Awards is an annual award ceremony presented by MTV to honor the best in the music video medium. The inaugural ceremony took place on September 14, 1984, at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and was hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler. The show honored the best music videos released between May 2, 1983, and May 2, 1984. Herbie Hancock was the night's biggest winner, taking home multiple awards. The ceremony was directed by Edd Griles and featured a number of notable performers and presenters. The event marked the beginning of the MTV Video Music Awards, which would go on to become a major annual event in the music industry. The 1984 ceremony was aired live and featured performances by various artists, including ZZ Top, the Go-Go's, and Rod Stewart.
