Overview

Mako: Island of Secrets is an Australian teen fantasy television series that premiered in 2013 and is also known internationally as Mako Mermaids. The story follows three young mermaids—Sirena, Nixie and Lyla—who belong to a mermaid pod that inhabits the waters surrounding Mako Island. Their primary duty is to protect the Moon Pool, a magical site that must be guarded against intruders. When the mermaids neglect their responsibilities during a full‑moon night, a sixteen‑year‑old land‑dweller named Zac enters the Moon Pool and forms a special connection with the island. As a result, Zac receives a fish‑like tail and extraordinary powers. The pod is compelled to leave Mako, leaving Sirena, Nixie and Lyla behind as cast‑outs. The series blends elements of comedy, drama, science‑fiction, fantasy and action‑adventure, and is rated TV‑G. Lucy Fry portrays Lyla in the show. The premise centers on the mermaids’ efforts to navigate their new circumstances while confronting the challenges posed by Zac’s newfound abilities and the mysteries of the Moon Pool.
