Doctor Who is a British science fiction television series that has been broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The program was created by Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber, and Donald Wilson. It follows the adventures of the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being from a humanoid species known as Time Lords. The Doctor explores the universe in the TARDIS, a sentient time-traveling spaceship. The exterior of this vessel appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain when the series first aired. Throughout the program, the Doctor is joined by a succession of companions. Together, they face a variety of foes while working to save civilizations, help ordinary people, and right many wrongs. As a Time Lord, the Doctor changes appearance and personality by regenerating when near death. The series features actors such as William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, and Tom Baker. The show chronicles these ongoing adventures in time and space as the protagonist battles various aliens and other threats across the universe.
