William Henry Hartnell, also known as Billy Hartnell or Bill Hartnell, was an English actor born on January 8, 1908, in Saint Pancras, London, England. He passed away on April 23, 1975, at the age of 67. Hartnell entered the theatre in 1925, initially working under Frank Benson as a general stagehand. During his early theatrical career, he appeared in numerous Shakespearian plays including The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, As You Like It, Hamlet, and The Tempest in 1926.

As his career progressed, Hartnell became known for a variety of roles across television and film. He portrayed the first incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who from 1963 to 1966, a role for which he is widely recognized. His other television credits include appearing in the sitcom The Army Game as Company Sergeant Major Percy Bullimore from 1957 until 1958, and again in 1960. In film, he was known for playing Sergeant Grimshaw, the title character of the first Carry On film titled Carry On Sergeant, in 1958. Additionally, his filmography includes appearances associated with Doctor Who titles such as Doctor Who: Earthshock and Doctor Who: The Three Doctors.
