Overview
Black Lagoon is a Japanese anime television series based on the manga created by Rei Hiroe. The series follows a team of pirate mercenaries known as the Lagoon Company, who operate out of the fictional harbor city of Roanapur in southeast Thailand near the border of Cambodia. During the early to mid 1990s, this crew smuggles goods throughout the seas of Southeast Asia. The central narrative begins when a Japanese businessman is taken hostage by these modern-day pirates. After his own company writes him off and leaves him for dead, the businessman chooses to abandon his mundane corporate life. He decides to remain with his captors, joining the ruthless crew members Revy, Dutch, and Benny. The series was animated by Madhouse and produced by Geneon Entertainment, Shogakukan, and Geneon USA. Sunao Katabuchi served as the director and writer, while Masanori Shino handled character design. The first season aired in Japan from April to June 2006, followed by a second season titled The Second Barrage, which was broadcast starting in October 2006.
