William Milton Asher was an American screenwriter, film director, and television and film producer born on August 8, 1921, in New York City. He died on July 16, 2012. Asher was a prolific early television director who directed or produced more than two dozen series. His work includes introducing the sitcom Our Miss Brooks, which was adapted from a radio program, and directing I Love Lucy starting in 1952. In 1964, he began directing episodes of Bewitched, a series starring his wife, Elizabeth Montgomery. Asher also produced Bewitched starting from the fourth season. Due to his early success, one magazine article hyperbolically credited him with inventing the sitcom, and he was regarded as an early wunderkind of TV-land.
