His father worked as a Kentucky State Police Trooper. Simpson has released seven albums as a solo artist as of February 2022. His independent releases include his first two albums, High Top Mountain in 2013 and Metamodern Sounds in Country Music in 2014. His third album, A Sailor's Guide to Earth, was released in April 2016 on Atlantic Records as his first major-label release, earning him Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards. In addition to his musical career, Simpson is known for his acting work, including a role in the film The Dead Don't Die.
