Career overview

Sergio Corbucci was born in Rome, Italy, on December 6, 1926. After earning a college degree in economics, he entered the world of cinema. He became an Italian film director, screenwriter, and producer, and was also known by the name Stanley Corbett Enz. He was the older brother of screenwriter and film director Bruno Corbucci.

Corbucci was one of the main exponents of the Spaghetti Western genre during the 1960s and 1970s and was an influential director known for his contributions to the subgenre. Alongside Sergio Leone, he is considered one of the masters of the Italian western. While Sergio Leone is often credited with pioneering the genre, Corbucci directed some of its most violent entries. His most notable works included the original Django, which was released in 1966 and dealt with themes of racism, as well as Navajo Joe and The Great.

Over the course of his career, Corbucci was known for his very violent yet intelligent spaghetti westerns. Although he was for a long time considered an exploitation director, he eventually attained a vast following and has been easily compared to Sam Peckinpah or Sergio Leone. Corbucci passed away on December 1, 1990, at the age of 63.
