The son of German‑born Cincinnati feed‑store manager August Wilke and his wife Rose, he grew up in Cincinnati before moving to Miami, Florida, where he worked as a hotel lifeguard. Contact made during that time opened the door to the motion‑picture industry, and he began working as a stuntman. He continued stunt work into the mid‑1940s, at which point he started receiving credited acting roles in low‑budget Westerns and serials.
