Reared around the stockyards of Chicago during the Great Depression, Gist became interested in acting after ending up at Chicago's Hull House, a settlement house established by Jane Addams, instead of being sent to reform school following a fistfight. His career included work in Chicago radio, stage acting roles in Chicago and on Broadway in the production Harvey with Josephine Hull, and his motion picture debut in 20th Century-Fox's film Miracle on 34th Street in 1947.
