Phil Hartman was a Canadian-born American comedian, actor, screenwriter, and graphic designer. Hartman graduated from California State University, Northridge with a degree in graphic arts. He designed album covers for bands, including Poco and America, before joining the comedy group the Groundlings in 1975. Hartman co-wrote the film Pee-wee's Big Adventure and made recurring appearances as Captain Carl on Pee-wee's Playhouse. He is known for his acting work, with 89 known credits. Hartman passed away on May 28, 1998, at the age of 49.
