Jerzy Skolimowski is a Polish film director, screenwriter, dramatist, actor, and painter born in Lodz, Poland on May 5, 1938. His career includes work as a screenwriter for Andrzej Wajda's film Innocent Sorcerers in 1960. Following his directorial debut with The Menacing Eye in 1960, he has directed more than twenty films. Among his notable works are the Belgian film The Departure from 1967, Deep End from 1970 starring Jane Asher and John Moulder Brown, The Shout starring Alan Bates, Susannah York, and John Hurt, Moonlighting from 1982 starring Jeremy Irons, and Essential Killing starring Vincent Gallo. In 1967, he was awarded the Golden Bear prize for The Departure, and he also lived in Los Angeles for over twenty years.
