Jack Palance, born Volodymyr Palahniuk on February 18, 1919, was an American actor known for playing tough guys and villains. The son of Ukrainian immigrants born in Lattimer Mines, Pennsylvania, he served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and briefly attended Stanford University before pursuing a theatre career. He made his film acting debut in the 1950 film Panic in the Streets.
