He was noted for a raunchy comedic style, a heavy physical presence and a thick New York City accent. Hackett’s film career began in the early 1960s and quickly featured supporting parts that highlighted his distinctive humor. He portrayed Marcellus Washburn in the 1962 musical comedy The Music Man, a role that placed him alongside a cast of established musical performers.

In 1963 Hackett appeared as Benjy Benjamin in the ensemble road‑trip comedy It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, contributing his characteristic slapstick timing to the film’s chaotic narrative. He continued to work in family‑oriented fare, playing Tennessee Steinmetz in the 1968 Disney comedy The Love Bug, a role that paired his comic sensibility with the film’s automobile‑centric plot. Later in his career, Hackett provided the voice of Scuttle, the talkative seagull in Disney’s animated feature The Little Mermaid (1989), demonstrating his versatility in voice work as well as live‑action performance.
