Former Michigan football staffer Paige Shiver said university coaches knew of her relationship with ex-head coach Sherrone Moore and encouraged her to emotionally support him during work.
Shiver told “Good Morning America” that senior coaches instructed her to console Moore to calm him down, sometimes during game halftimes, and that she complied due to job security fears.
She said the relationship began in January 2022 when Moore was an assistant coach and that she learned she was pregnant with his child months later but had an abortion on medical advice due to her Pompe Disease diagnosis.
Shiver stated that Moore knew about her decision and told her to do what was right for her body during an interview where she became emotional when asked if she wanted to keep the baby.
Moore was sentenced to 18 months probation earlier this month after pleading no contest to misdemeanor malicious utilize of a telecommunications device and misdemeanor trespassing related to visiting Shiver’s home after his December firing for cause.
Athletic director Warde Manuel said he felt betrayed by Moore upon learning of the affair, stating he was hurt for the staff, student-athletes, and university given prior discussions about employee expectations.
Judge Cedric Simpson praised Moore’s wife Kelli during sentencing, noting the burden she carried; Kelli and Moore have been married since 2015 and share three children.
Shiver said she went along with the emotional support role due to the fact that no one considered her feelings and staff wanted to use her to gain Moore through the season.
