Cancer Rates Increasing in Younger Women

Historically cancer rates increase with age, but data from the American Cancer Society shows…“We’re seeing more and more younger patients being diagnosed, and even with that, younger patients being diagnosed, there’s been a tilt with more women, particularly troubling to me is young women below 50 being diagnosed,” said Oncologist Dr. Santosh Kagathur.
 
This is likely due to a combination of factors. “Diet, lifestyle. You know, there’s been a staggering increase in obesity rates, alcohol consumption, delaying childbearing…We know for a fact that pregnancy and conception decreases ovarian cancer,” said Dr. Kagathur.
 
Dr. Kagathur encourages his patients to avoid processed foods and limit red meat intake. “You’ve really got to have a balanced meal and work ourselves to having little bit more vegetables, green leafy vegetables, and legumes.
 
However, the good news is that overall cancer mortality has decreased by more than 30% over the last 30 years. “It’s probably attributed to new novel therapy, advanced immunotherapy, early detection to some extent has helped all cancer mortality numbers to be lower and survival rates be higher, and of course, there’s been a big push for smoking cessation,” said Dr. Kagathur.
