The Express News Group hosted the latest in its roundtable Express Sessions “Conversations not to be Missed” discussion series, “Battery Energy Storage System Technology Is Green — But Is It Safe?” at Cowfish restaurant in Hampton Bays on March 13.
Southampton Town is in the midst of enacting legislation to severely restrict the location of BESS facilities in the town, based largely on fears that the energy storage facilities, which are a key element of New York’s plans to move toward a clean energy future, could be dangerous. Several high-profile incidents involving fires at BESS facilities have heightened worries about siting BESS facilities near residential areas or primary arteries of travel. The discussion asked whether there is there was a way forward that both fosters green energy and protects citizens.
The panel included: Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore; Southampton Town Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara; Southampton Town Chief Fire Marshal John Rankin; Energy Storage Specialist Paul Rogers of the Energy Safety Response Group in New York City; and Long Island Power Authority Senior Vice President of Power Supply Gary Stephenson.
