Secretly discharging waste into Ba Bo canal, people live with the stench

Ba Bo Canal is a canal located on the border between Thuan An City (Binh Duong) and Thu Duc City (HCMC).

Every day, Ba Bo canal receives industrial wastewater from Song Than 1 Industrial Park, Song Than 2, Dong An Industrial Park, along with domestic wastewater from tens of thousands of surrounding people, before flowing into the Saigon River.

Many years ago, Binh Duong province and Ho Chi Minh City invested more than 1,000 billion VND to solve the pollution problem of Ba Bo canal. After the investment, Ba Bo canal water quality and environmental landscape improved.

However, recently, the water quality of Ba Bo canal has shown signs of pollution again. People living along the Ba Bo canal said that compared to before, the pollution situation has decreased but has not been completely resolved.

Mr. Nguyen Van Du – Head of the Executive Board of Dong An 3 Quarter (Binh Hoa Ward, Thuan An City), said that at the end of Ba Bo Canal, every rainy day the sewer discharges black water. Mr. Vu The Dung in KP. Dong An 2 (Binh Hoa ward) also said that secretly discharging wastewater and garbage directly into the canal is one of the causes of canal pollution. Although it has not been detected yet, this condition often occurs when it rains or at night.

In recent meetings with voters, people in Binh Hoa ward (Thuan An city) have reflected on the pollution situation in Ba Bo canal. At the same time, people petitioned the authorities to take measures to monitor, punish and overcome the pollution situation.

According to Mr. Ngo Quang Su – Director of Binh Duong Department of Natural Resources and Environment, to control wastewater discharge from businesses, the province has installed automatic wastewater monitoring systems for 6 industrial parks.

In the coming time, the Natural Resources and Environment sector will install more automatic environmental monitoring stations for air, underground water, and surface water.

Strengthening the capacity to monitor environmental components will ensure full monitoring of environmental components, and predict environmental quality in the province in the future.

The Natural Resources and Environment sector will proactively notify and warn waste source owners if there are signs of wastewater exceeding standards to promptly remediate.

“At the same time, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment will strengthen inspection and strictly handle waste source owners who do not remediate, allowing wastewater to exceed standards into the environment,” Mr. Su said.
