The patient has been self-medicating at home for many months but has not recovered. The patient then went for examination and treatment at a medical facility near his home but it was ineffective.
Suffering from “loss of appetite and sleep”, the patient went to the Inter-specialty Department of Eyes – Ear, Nose and Throat – Maxillofacial Surgery of Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital for examination and treatment.
Here, after examination and performing paraclinical indications, the patient was diagnosed: necrotizing osteonecrosis of the left lower jaw in a diabetic patient. At the same time, at the location of the extracted tooth, there is still a piece of dead bone that has not been removed.
The patient was prescribed surgery: dredging the inflammation and removing dead bone fragments. 2 days after surgery, the incision was stable and there was no more drainage. 5 days after surgery, the patient almost completely recovered, no longer had pain, no swelling or inflammation, and was discharged from the hospital.
According to Dr. Le Thi Thanh Thuy, Head of the Department of Eye – Ear, Nose and Throat – Maxillofacial Surgery, jaw bone inflammation is one of the complications that can occur after tooth extraction, especially in patients with systemic diseases. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.
Sometimes the patient does not have local conditions such as: bone inflammation or root cysts… during tooth extraction.

“Therefore, before tooth extraction, patients need to be examined, have general tests done and necessary paraclinical orders at reputable hospitals or medical facilities.
In particular, when signs of pain and swelling appear after tooth extraction, patients should immediately go to the hospital or medical facility to be examined and treated by specialists,” Dr. Thuy recommended. .
According to Dr. Thuy, in addition to jaw bone inflammation, after tooth extraction, there can also be some complications such as: Pain, gingivitis, alveolar inflammation, etc. To minimize complications that can occur after extraction patients should choose a reputable dental clinic to receive the best examination and treatment. Especially for patients experiencing complications due to systemic disease, after stable treatment, the patient must still be regularly monitored and examined.
