I had never done any business with Trump but obviously I knew all about him big bullying billionaires they all think they're you know God's gift to humanity and if you suck up to them or knuckle under they just want more they famously had a ra about the refugee deal which involved America Taking a number of the people from Manis Island which had been done with Obama for whatever reason President Obama said that they were going to take uh probably well over a thousand uh illegal immigrants who were in prisons and they were going to bring them and Take them into this country and I just said Why so when when I came to speak with Trump Julie Bishop gets rung by Mike Pence the vice president and Mike says to Julie the president's not going to honor the refugee deal prime minister shouldn't refer to it so I you know raised that matter with The president and he was very angry and we had quite a row about it president Trump you know he had some idea that you know these people were dangerous criminals um that we were somehow going to for on them and I don't you know he was sort of incredulous that President Obama could have agreed to something um you know something so crazy and that's when the conversation you know got quite quite heated and I remember looking up from this call to look at David and he was about as white as a sheet he was he looked and I thought to myself oh dear This clearly isn't going well anyway it turned out to be a good call it's essentially the the summary was um it started off uh no way Jose and ended up yes but I hate you so from I got the right outcome but it was pretty pretty tough call I think turnbull's achievements on The global stage have never been sufficiently appreciated it wasn't Tony's natural habitat but it was Malcolm's natural habitat and he had a very very strong foreign minister in Julie Bishop Malcolm he was obeying he was persuasive he was charming and he's one of the most impressive global leaders in the world And was acknowledged as such by his contemporaries One of the reasons is that he was one of the only world leaders who could deal with Donald Trump
