Israel's government is scrambling to deal with a Supreme Court decision that has ordered ultra-orthodox Jewish men to be drafted into the military Middle East correspondent Eric Torchic reports religious leaders have pledged to defy the ruling they've called it unfair and humiliating to their communities there are also practical problems with implementing it in the past when this issue has come up Israel's military has said it's hard for it to draft large numbers of ultra Orthodox men because they have special religious needs and limited education and if the Israeli government stops funding these Bible colleges where most of the young Ultra Orthodox study it will anger the ultra Orthodox parties that are key members of the governing Coalition those parties can't exactly leave though because the other parties in Israel are even more hostile towards their needs uh given the bulk of Israel's population thinks young Ultra Orthodox men should serve in the military just like everyone else and there's a growing need for more soldiers given the on going conflict in Gaza and a potential invasion of Southern Lebanon to fight Hezbollah also in Gaza a key report has found that a famine is no longer imminent but the report says a high risk of famine in the territory is continuing and that around half a million people or 1 of gaza's population are still suffering a catastrophic shortage of food it acknowledges that even though it's lowered the classification for famine Within within the territory that extreme human suffering is ongoing in Gaza and that these conditions are likely to continue as long as armed conflict continues in Gaza and humanitarian access remains restricted
