Using Light to Hear the Whales is a journalistic research film that translates a complex sensing method, Distributed Acoustic Sensing, into something general audiences can understand. Shot on San Juan Island and built with field footage, interviews, and explanatory motion graphics sequences, it shows how UW Bothell researchers use fiber‑optic cable to detect and localize orca calls. The piece was designed for multi‑use across news, donor engagement, and social channels, ultimately earning significant local broadcast pickup.
