Jim Furyk is returning as United States Ryder Cup captain for 2027 after the PGA of America confirmed his selection following Tiger Woods’ withdrawal from consideration.
Furyk will lead the American team at Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland, from September 17-19, 2027, in an effort to end the United States’ seven-match losing streak on European soil. The last American victory abroad came in 1993 at The Belfry in England by a score of 15-13.
The decision came after Woods removed himself from consideration following his March 27 arrest in Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence. Woods later stated he was stepping away indefinitely to seek treatment and focus on his health, formally declining the captaincy role.
This marks Furyk’s second stint as Ryder Cup captain, having previously led the U.S. Team in 2018 at Le Golf National in France, where Europe won 17½ to 10½. That year was notable for internal tensions, including Patrick Reed publicly blaming Jordan Spieth and Furyk for benching him twice during the matches.
Since his Ryder Cup debut as a player in 1997, Furyk has participated in 14 consecutive editions — nine as a player, four as a vice captain and once as captain. His experience includes serving as vice captain on winning teams at Hazeltine in 2016 and Whistling Straits in 2021.
Furyk also led the United States to victory as Presidents Cup captain in 2024 and served as a trusted assistant to U.S. Captain Keegan Bradley during the most recent Ryder Cup, where Europe secured a second consecutive win under Luke Donald at Bethpage Black in Novel York.
Europe has won 11 of the last 15 Ryder Cup meetings, building momentum since the expansion of the British and Irish team to include all of continental Europe. While the United States leads the all-time series 27-16 with two ties, Europe holds a 13-9-1 advantage since that structural change.
PGA of America vice president Nathan Charnes praised Furyk’s long-standing influence, noting his presence on every U.S. Ryder Cup team since 1997 and describing him as a trusted, widely respected leader whose experience will strengthen the squad.
Furyk acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating his passion for the Ryder Cup and commitment to the U.S. Team have never been stronger. He emphasized his intention to draw on past experience while integrating new ideas to position players for success.
Why was Tiger Woods not considered for the 2027 Ryder Cup captaincy?
Tiger Woods withdrew from consideration after his March 27 arrest in Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence. He later announced he was stepping away indefinitely from golf to seek treatment and focus on his health, formally declining the captaincy role.

What is the significance of Furyk’s second captaincy in the context of U.S. Ryder Cup history?
Furyk becomes only the fourth U.S. Captain since 1979 — the start of the modern era with continental Europe’s inclusion — to serve a second term, underscoring the rarity of the appointment and the value placed on his experience.
