Overview

Transition is a documentary film released in the United States on June 8, 2023, with a runtime of one hour and twenty-eight minutes. The film was directed by journalists Jordan Bryon and Monica Villamizar. Australian filmmaker Jordan Bryon lived and worked as a journalist and filmmaker in Afghanistan for more than six years. Following the departure of United States forces, Bryon stayed in the country to document Afghan life under the male-centric Taliban leadership. The documentary follows Bryon as he documents the lives of Taliban members after their takeover of the country. Simultaneously, Bryon undergoes a gender transition as a trans man. With his colleague, Teddy, Bryon heads to a Taliban stronghold in the north-west of the country shortly after starting his transition. If the Taliban were to discover that he is trans, they would likely kill him. The film portrays a chaotic time for both the country and for Jordan as he navigates his personal transformation and looks toward the future.
