The episode follows the California Bureau of Investigation’s effort to determine whether the girl’s lack of memory is a product of trauma, a deliberate concealment, or an indication of innocence.

Patrick Jane, a former celebrity psychic medium who now works as a civilian consultant for the CBI, takes a particular interest in the case. Drawing on his reputation for acute observation and his habit of questioning surface‑level conclusions, Jane doubts that the girl could have committed the murder. He argues that the evidence of her holding the weapon may be misleading and that her amnesia could be a protective response rather than an admission of guilt.

To test his theory, Jane devises a high‑risk strategy that forces the suspect to confront the events she cannot remember. He arranges a controlled reenactment of the night’s terror, hoping that the sensory and emotional intensity will trigger a suppressed recollection. The maneuver places
