The Great is a television series that follows the story of Catherine, a royal woman in 18th century Russia who navigates power, politics, and personal turmoil as she ascends from nobility to becoming one of history's most notable rulers. Described as "anti-historical," the show takes creative liberties with historical events, focusing on Catherine's explosive relationship with her husband, Peter, the Emperor of Russia. Created and primarily written by Australian playwright Tony McNamara, the series is based on his 2008 play of the same name. It blends drama and satire while exploring themes of ambition and self-determination. The first season, consisting of ten episodes, premiered on Hulu. The series stars Elle Fanning, Phoebe Fox, Gwilym Lee, and Adam Godley. It later became available for streaming on Netflix.
