The screenplay was written by Rasmus Heisterberg and Nikolaj Arcel, based on the 2005 novel by Swedish writer Stieg Larsson. The film features actors Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Ewa Froling, and Lena Endre. The plot follows Mikael Blomkvist, a middle-aged publisher for the magazine Millennium who loses a libel case brought by industrialist Hans-Erik Wennerstrom. Following this, Blomkvist is hired by Henrik Vanger to investigate the disappearance of Vanger’s niece, Harriet, who vanished under mysterious circumstances forty years earlier. The investigation pairs the journalist with a young female hacker to solve the cold case. The project was produced by Soren Staemose and serves as the first entry in the series based on the work of Stieg Larsson.
