Overview
The Avengers is a television series that premiered in 1961 and ran until 1969. The program is described as a quirky spy show that follows the adventures of an eccentrically suave British agent named John Steed. As an urbane and proper gentleman spy, Steed works to protect the world from various diabolical schemes. Throughout the duration of the series, he is joined by a succession of partners to thwart the plans of evil-doers, including threats such as robots and man-eating monsters. The assistants who team up with Steed over the course of the show include Dr. David Keel, Cathy Gale, Emma Peel, and Tara King. This television production is distinct from the superhero team of the same name featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which consists of various characters based on the original Marvel Comics. While the Marvel franchise focuses on epic superhero films and comic book narratives, this 1961 series centers specifically on the espionage missions of Steed and his predominantly female colleagues.
